DoDonPachi 1CC Saga Part 2: No Missing Stage 1 to 4 (and the truth about "getting better at the genre")


GOAL : getting a 1CC in DDP and raising my hardware skill cap of raw bullet pattern reading to become a 2nd loop player.

STRATEGY : do well in the first 4 stages so you can fully bomb every pixel in stage 5 and 6, then route stage 5 and 6 and forget to bomb.

On my first day of runs, after doing a week or 3 of routing and practicing stage 3, 4 and 5 I managed to get to the stage 4 boss with an extend and 4 bombs left. However instead of just safely bombing it and get to Stage 5 I chose to more or less sacrifice the run to get experience of doing the stage 4 boss under pressure. I ended the run with 12.8m score.


After this first attempt I noticed my Stage 3 gameplay wasn't as consistent as I wanted (see Part 1 of this series). After going back abd optimizing the routing and strategy for stage 3 I went for another session of runs.
On my second day I instantly played well (this time I used not 1 but 2 secret weapons hihihi) my best run out of like 4 attempts was this one : 


I managed to get to the end section of stage 4 with 4 lives and for some reason I still had my xpadder profile set to Thunder Force 3, so I called up the save state screen by accident when i was at the final section of stage 4 while still having 4 lives and one score extend coming up, totally ruining my run😭
On paper it's possible to bomb every last pixel in stage 5 and 6 with those amounts of extends (see strategy section above😇 )
The whole play session I could feel that my secret method of improving was working, I could feel it for example in the millimeter control I had during practicing the stage 4 boss' needle attack it was just as if everything felt bigger and spacier or as if I was zoomed in without having to zoom in.


I added a timestamp here to a section i'd like to highlight, I messed up the routing here and the big tank spawns it's super dangerous bullets and I'm amazed by the amount of confidence I displayed here, instead of just bombing it, i tried to first macro dodge it by going around it and then even trying to sneak back into the pattern at some point which is insanely hard to do, that attempt fails but I recover and go back to more macro dodging and then bombing it a few moments later ! Just a few days ago before I employed my methodologies this would have been impossible.


This part of the run is also worth highlighting : here i also went off route and I wasn't able to stop the tank from spawning it's vomit, and i got forced to do some mega clutch dodging and it totally worked out, wow !


After the save state issue, i did my best Jaimers imitation and what I did there is just impossible, anyone's that's familiar with this game knows it's just not possible to ever cross the big tanks line of direct frontal fire, and I was somehow able to do just that 4 times in a few seconds
This last part is impressive even for a really good player they would have to admit this was well played. Doing that with the tanks is alot harder than spambombing stage 5 and 6 to get a 1CC
What im interested in is how was I able to do that and how can I make sure I can reproduce stuff like this☺️

That's a good question : how *did* i manage to do this? Well I made some huge improvements in my 'raw bullet pattern reading' ability and the truth is that none of those were attributable to playing the game(s) alot. You don't really get better by just playing more (unless you were already super talented to begin with). To improve I didn't just play the game, that will only make you better at the game's specific routes, stages and boss strategies not at the raw base bullet pattern reading ability. Instead, what I did was to consciously applied 2 concepts that took alot research, design and analysis to even come up with the idea to begin with . I applied these to raise my hardware skill cap : optometry (this goes far beyond just getting prescription glasses) and supercompensation, I'll write about those in another post, promised !

After I managed to totally own stage 5 I did a full run to see how I would do there. Stage 5 went pretty good, very consistent with my practice sessions and  because of that I managed to somehow save the run which went terrible, by scoring a survival and score pb (personal best) making it to stage 6 and almost hitting the 20m (which gives another extend) By that time I hadn't done any runs for like 3 weeks and stage 4 in particular was rusty with 3 misses. So before doing any more runs I wanted to take some time to relearn the route and at the same time optimize it for consistency by pre assigning 2 bombs at the last section just for good measure. Supercompensation Chronicles Part 2 : Touhou 7 PCB Lunatic

This was a hard test and some pretty solid and definitive proof for me that the principle of supercompensation is working and it will work for anything and everything, stage, boss, game and difficulty. The clip doesn't look so impressive but I managed to make it through the hard part at the middle almost every single time, that's pretty significant, 2 days ago I couldn't do this at all, maybe 1 or 2 out of 10 max ! This pattern looks easy but it's somehow demanding to read and navigate. I have done 3 sessions of Touhou Lunatic patterns and at the 3rd I can now make it through a very tricky unroutable and tough pattern consistently either almost or completely. By just playing normally and trying this pattern over and over it feels as if you're just hitting a wall, a ceiling, a "hardware cap" as some very good players would say.
