DoDonPachi Saga Part 5 : Stage 4 payback time !!  ermm I mean analysis and process of routing stage 4 (...and uhm bikini's) Previously, on the DoDonPachi Saga... After I managed to totally own stage 5 I did a full run to see how I would do there. Stage 5 went pretty good, very consistent with my practice sessions and  because of that I managed to somehow save the run which went terrible, by scoring a survival and score pb (personal best) making it to stage 6 and almost hitting the 20m (which gives another extend) By that time I hadn't done any runs for like 3 weeks and stage 4 in particular was rusty with 3 misses. So before doing any more runs I wanted to take some time to relearn the route and at the same time optimize it for consistency by pre assigning 2 bombs at the last section just for good measure. Stage 4 took my clothes, what now ? Should I just "practice" or just keep grinding runs and hope for the best ? That is not my style. The mo...

DoDonPachi Saga Part 4 : Testing out stage 5 consistency in a run and scoring a new PB (1-6 19,504,290

DoDonPachi Saga Part 4 : Testing out stage 5 consistency in a run and scoring a new PB(1-6 19,540,290) After feeling comfortable in banging out good stage 1 to 4's with few resources used, I could have chosen to go with the bomb everything in stage 5 and 6 option. However that just somehow feels a bit dirty. Almost like cheating. Not cheating the game, but myself. What would I gain from just spam bombing my way to victory ? That's why I decided that I wanted to do Stage 5 on reading ability with just a few planned bombs (for consistency). After using Supercompensation and optometry I managed to actually pull that off which before starting on this honeymoon with ddp I wouldn't have believed was a realistic thing.  After, over the course of a few weeks not only creating and learning as low bomb route but also actually upgrade my raw bullet reading ability of hall of hell I managed to get it consistenct in practice with multiple stage 5 runs going well no miss or 1...

Why "where to look on the screen" is the wrong question

Image
(this post refers to stuff mentioned in the previous post) Another interesting case is that I wrote some stuff down during that day, in my analysis of why things went bad I didnt realise Tetris had affected me so I was under the assumption my visual system was working optimal that day, and that there was something that I was doing consciously (or should I say not doing) that was the culprit. What I wrote down was : 1) Am I looking too far up the screen ? 2) maybe stage 5, put me into a habit of looking very far up the screen (because stage 5 forces you to make sweeps very high up or else you will be forced to bomb it and have no chance to read/dodge anything if you stay too low) With my best knowledge at the time (no bad condition, and or visual system working optimally) this was the most logical conclusion. However l,yesterday, I had not given a single thought to where I looked on the screen and I could basically view and see all, all the time, regardless where i looked ! ...

Why "Just practicing" is a terrible model of making progress as a shmup player (and a case study of bad condition)

Image
I find beauty in working systematically at the fundamentals and perfecting those I'm not so much talking about the stage 4 route (explained below) but more about this : last Monday, I played unknowingly with (Tetris induced) bad condition, trying to work on stage 4 and I found it no fun. I was blaming the stage (unfun design, lesser than stage 5 etc) but in reality I was projecting my own (that days) inability. I couldn't rely at all on reading bulletpatterns and i felt forced to route everything hard, *and* at the same time I couldn't execute routes consistently ! And all of a sudden, yesterday (that week's, Friday (with only a 1 hour game session between those days on Wednesday) seemingly out of nowhere I could do 16 minutes of that stage 4 without making a single mistake in anything, reading, routing, bullets from a far, running into bullets etc. Stage 4 perfect for 15 mins long How is this gigantic difference possible ? This cannot be explain...

What is 'bad/good condition ?

Image
What is bad condition ? "bad condition"  refers to a quote from a Japanese super player when he was asked about how well he would do in his run the next day he said "The 1CC is possible if my condition is good." What he was saying is that it depended on a phenomenon which he called condition (as an analogy) and that this "condition could be 'good' or 'bad'. In the hardcore shmup community this is used as a meme, however every joke has a core of truth, and if a Japanese super player who intuitively tries to seriously explains an important question and topic says this, there is plenty reason to assume there is more behind it than just a meme. He obviously was very serious, he wasn't joking at all. Whatever it is, it is real and affects even a player or his calibre. Even tho it is being used as a meme, the concept also being used semi-seriously to grasp something that isn't well explicated. Personally, this is how I ...

DoDonPachi Saga Part 3 : Getting consistent with stage 5 to make it run ready (without bomb spamming)

DDP Saga Part 3 : Getting consistent with stage 5 to make it run ready (without bomb spamming) My Goal(s) "I want to play stage 5, play it well and have fun doing it." One of my main or even the biggest goal of playing DoDonPachi was to be able to do stage 5 well, consistently and on demand. I don't like spamming runs hoping for that moment where the stars align. The infamous DoDonPachi Stage 5 For me stage 5 is superfun because you can't really route it alot, it mostly comes down to pure bulletreading. But to put it in perspective  stage 5 is generally considered very hard, to be legitimately bomb spammed at any sign of danger (unless you're really good and/or going for a 2 loop clear or a major high score) When I designed my initial route I was on paper able to do stage 5 no miss awhile back : Stage 5 No Miss 4 Bomb So while I could do it on paper, i did it back then just too design a route, but hadn't really mastered it yet. So i cou...

Supercompensation Chronicles Part 2 : Touhou 7 PCB Lunatic

Image
This was a hard test and some pretty solid and definitive proof for me that the principle of supercompensation is working and it will work for anything and everything, stage, boss, game and difficulty. The clip doesn't look so impressive but I managed to make it through the hard part at the middle almost every single time, that's pretty significant, 2 days ago I couldn't do this at all, maybe 1 or 2 out of 10 max ! This pattern looks easy but it's somehow demanding to read and navigate. I have done 3 sessions of Touhou Lunatic patterns and at the 3rd I can now make it through a very tricky unroutable and tough pattern consistently either almost or completely. By just playing normally and trying this pattern over and over it feels as if you're just hitting a wall, a ceiling, a "hardware cap" as some very good players would say. I don't believe this is how it works at all. Here is the recording :      I actually decided not to do ...
